Android 2.3.3 - Gingerbread - On its way!

NFC Chips A potentially revolutionary technology has been introduced that enables Android users running Gingerbread to read NFC chips (similar to a barcode scanner that uses radio waves instead of lines). And that’s not all. The NFC chips in the Nexus S reportedly include NFC writing capabilities in addition to the reading ones.

Developers, who wanted to exploit the hidden writing capabilities, risked ruining their apps when things change. Thankfully, that’s no longer an issue.

Gingerbread has not made huge inroads into the Android market yet. Google is releasing an update to Gingerbread, 2.3.3, for users running 2.3.2.

Developers, who want to develop their apps, can do so by using API level 10. Doing this gives them access to:

-Letting apps read and write to any standard NFC tag, by using a comprehensive NFC reader/writer.

-More control over how apps are launched when an NFC tag comes into range, by using advanced Intent dispatching.

-Providing limited support for peer-to-peer connection with other NFC devices.

Only end-users using Android devices with a supported NFC chip will be able to run apps and explore the full potential of this technology. Hopefully, we are going to hear more about this in future!
